CONFESSION (based on Psalm 106)
We, like those before us, have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness. We, like our fathers, when they were in Egypt, do not consider your wondrous works; we overlook the abundance of your steadfast love, we rebel regularly. But in our fathers’ rebellion, you saved them, you made known your mighty power. You rebuked the Red Sea, and it became dry, and you led them through the deep as through a desert. You, God, saved them from the hand of the foe and redeemed them from the power of the enemy. And the waters covered their adversaries; not one of them was left. Then they believed your words were true; they sang his praise. But they soon forgot your mighty works; they did not wait for your counsel. And this is us: We are prone to forget your goodness to us in Jesus. Our open hands and joyful song quickly turn to clinched fists and cursing tongues. We bow down to the gods of power, achievement, control, acceptance —idols, which grip our feet and falsely nurture our hearts. Help us! We are a troubled people. Remind us of your immense love for us. Pour out your mercy once again. Lead us out of exile, that we may give thanks to your glorious name.
